Proud owner of a Hypervolt massage gun?

If you are, you’ve doubtlessly enjoyed the lengthy battery life. The Hyperice Hypervolt Massage Gun is known not only for its shockingly quiet yet powerful brushless motor, but also its battery power that’ll just keep going.

In addition to its battery power, its rechargeable design means it’s cordless, which makes it all that much more convenient to enjoy your massage.

A part of having a massage gun, and keeping it, is taking care of it. We’ve gathered all the info, including best practices, so you can get the most out of your Hypervolt Battery, and maybe take advantage of a few benefits, too.

What Kind of Battery Does a Hypervolt Massage Gun Have?

Whether you have the Hypervolt Plus, the Elite or the Hypervolt 2, all are fitted with the same rechargeable design — a 24V lithium-ion battery. It’s one of the top-selling factors of Hyperice Hypervolt massage guns.

Lithium-ion batteries are the top-of-the-line, gold standard of batteries. They’re what power our cellphones, hybrid electric cars and many of the electronics we enjoy daily. If your device is rechargeable, it’s very possible it has a lithium-ion battery.

The Science Behind Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion battery cells are considered to be one of the best, if not the best, because their energy densities are higher than other rechargeable options. They also offer up to 3.6 Volts, which is 3x than the other options.

Putting it simply, they can handle high-power applications without much maintenance or regularly scheduled cycling to maintain their life.

An additional benefit is that they contain very little toxic material, so when it comes time to dispose of them, it’s quite simple. That said, you should always follow local waste protocols.

Safety

One thing that’s important to understand about lithium-ion batteries is that they have a tendency to overheat, which can lead them to catch fire. They can also be damaged at high voltages.

Hyperice provides answers in product info manuals for each of their products.

Any product that comes with the Hypervolt battery states that it should only be charged with the two-pronged charger that came with the massage gun, the only exception being the Hypervolt charging base.

The product manual also stresses the importance of not leaving the battery unattended while charging, including overnight. Though it is designed to be perfectly safe, there is always a risk with electronic products.

For these reasons, most importers will not ship lithium-ion batteries in bulk, and it’s safe to assume they keep a close eye on the stuff they do.

Value

Lithium is a metal, and it’s one that is not sustainable long-term because there just isn’t enough of it. This impacts the cost of the battery, making them about 40% more expensive than other similar products.

How Long Will It Last?

Lithium-ion batteries are known for holding a reliable, long-lasting charge. Hyperice claims that the Hypervolt battery provides up to 3 hours of battery life. However, it seems to depend on the model and care practices.

If you’re using the Hypervolt Plus, you can expect to get around 2 to 2.5hrs, whereas with the Hypervolt 2, you may expect 3 hours of charge.

Most lithium-ion batteries have a lifespan of about 300 and 500 discharge/charge cycles, which, if you charge your Hypervolt battery every day, you’ll likely get about a year to a year and a half out of it.

Keep in mind, that’s pretty extensive use for the average person, as it would mean you’re using it 3 hours a day.

Can It Be Replaced?

Though they’ve developed their own rechargeable design, Hypervolt’s battery can be replaced, which is a great option to have in terms of the longevity of your Hyperice Hypervolt massage gun.

Lithium is a limited material, as we discussed earlier, and for that reason, they aren’t cheap. You can buy the Hypervolt battery for $80. However, if you’re getting a lot of use out of your gun, you can take advantage of the fact that Hyperice sells replacement batteries and order yourself an extra battery.

Many athletes, sports teams, physical therapists and massage therapists who use Hyperice products actually use a variety of massagers. In purchasing extra batteries, they benefit not only by being able to continue using their gun while charging, but they can also use the Hypervolt battery interchangeably with the various Hyperice massage guns.

Charging the Hypervolt Battery

Hyperice thought of it all when designing the Hypervolt battery.

On the back of the gun, by the power button, you’ll find five LED lights: four are green and one is red. These lights show you how much battery life you have left, with the green eventually shutting off until you come to only red, indicating battery juice is almost out.

You also have the LED light band, called the Light Halo, at the bottom of the gun. The Light Halo is solid green when it’s fully charged and will eventually fade out as the energy store decreases, until it too turns red.

Though the Hypervolt battery can be charged at any battery level, Hyperice doesn’t recommend depleting the battery to the point where it reaches red, as this can affect the lifespan of the battery itself. In fact, this is a rule for lithium-ion batteries across the board.

Best Practices

The best practice for charging a lithium-ion battery is to wait until it’s at about 50%. This is because lithium-ion batteries are under more strain when at or near 0% or 100%. Tech magazine, Wired, describes this phenomenon:

“The real sweet spot for a battery is 50 percent charge, as that means that half of its moveable lithium ions are in the lithium cobalt oxide layer and the other half are in the graphite layer. This equilibrium puts the least amount of strain on the battery and extends the number of charge cycles it can withstand before degrading.”

Keeping your Hypervolt battery in cooler conditions (don’t store it above the dryer) will also help to lengthen its life. Think of the fan in your old college laptop — its job was to cool the battery.

How to Charge

The Hypervolt battery is very easy to remove. If you’ve ever struggled to open the back of a remote to replace the batteries, you’ll understand that’s a big benefit.

To remove the battery, all you need to do is lightly press the battery release button with your thumb. Using the other hand, firmly pull downwards on the battery handle.

Connect the end of the provided wall charger to the charging port on the bottom of the handle and plug the charger into a wall outlet.

Keep in mind, the Hypervolt will not operate while plugged into the charger.

Making things even more convenient, Hypervolt created a charging base. Holding your Hypervolt upright, the base allows you to throw your gun on charge without having to deal with plugging in. Plus its sleek chrome, bevel-edge finish puts your Hypervolt on display.

Bottom Line

The lithium-ion battery is the force behind your Hypervolt battery massage gun sessions. Make sure to take good care of it and it will take good care of you.
